Evaluation: Part 1 // Brief
What brief were you working to?
Depicted below is the brief that were originally given at the start of he A2 course, we were informed to create a music video and ancillary products such as a digital and a magazine advert which helped promote our artist. We also decided to stick with the same groups we initially formed back for the AS course.
We were working in the medium of music based texts specifically a music video, the brief had told us the following.
You have been hired by PL Records to manage the promotion of one of their new acts. You have been contracted to create
-one music video package
- a 6 or 8 gate cover for the artist's digipak
- an A4 magazine advertisement promoting the digipak
When coming up for ideas or brainstorming for our own individual music video, we had to look for copyright free music that either could be found on websites such as Youtube, sound cloud and many other non copyrighted artists that have many royalty free audio. We found a song by Nav on Sound-cloud that had non copyrighted songs and we contacted him through email, to see permission and he openly accepted.
Later on we had to create Two ancillary products to help promote our artist with our music video and we decided to create a digipak and a magazine advert to help synergise with our music video, we primarily used mise-en-scene and post editing to convey our artists brand and identity across to help create a mood and the iconography that we wanted to create. It was also very important that we made sure that all three of our products flowed and worked well with each other, creating a link which was very clear for our target audience to immediately relate and recognise the artist. We uses typical conventions of each product such as the use of our genre of a rap realism that we chose for our artist.

The use of typography and pictures of an urban environment and use of typography which has a grand type feel from the use of the flicks of the letters and tails which give the font a much more bold high status feel to it. This was heavily inspired by Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. font which helped shape and influence our artist for our song Diamond's. the use of colour are also heavily prominent with our products especially the heavy use of purples and oranges as our colour platte.
Who was the artist? How did you find them? How did you seek permission?
Our Artist was Nav who made copyright free music and now works in the music industry. His songs were easy to fins as they were all found on his sound cloud page, and we contacting him through twitter as it was the most likely way to get permission. We never got a reply back from him granting us permission but we made sure the song was allowed through youtube, to check to see if there was any copyright tags connected to the music and their wasn't.
Explain the music genre and what attracted you to the artist?
The music genre of Nav's 'Diamonds' is more of a slow rap with some other elements making it a slight hybrid, usually rap songs are very fast paced and continuous in flow but 'Diamonds' is more slow paced and only gets fast during the chorus as the tempo rises. Nav reminds me of an indie artist as the song differs from traditional rap videos and this created and interest for me and my partner, as the music allowed us to create something different and unique such as the snow and forest scenes as we intended.

We also chose this song because of the pace of the song this allowed us to have slightly longer shots for some scenes and this allowed us to create much more story elements in the shots but also allows the audience to take in and understand as time went on, so there's a vague presence of Todorovs narrative, because of this less heavily focused narrative which was the main part of the story, we explored more visually creative shots to help make our music video more enjoyable to watch. We stayed true to the performance and theory behind it and the themes are present within the music video such as aspiration, and wanting to get somewhere, which is shown through the old VHS film footage shots in the music video. Even the shots of the Graffiti and alleyways denote a sense of growing up in a deprived area and entering the professional world, which are shown through the studio shots and green screen. The music of this song heavily helped contribute to the feel and style of this song as it allowed us to explore new ways to create our own music video, and the actors such as my partner Faheem was a great choice to have as the representation of our artist because of the mise-en-scene and vibe that he creates which is a direct link between him and the artist.

Blog Reflection - Week 12
What have you been focusing on this week? This week we recorded the footage in London such as the graffiti shots and some London Eye shots that have the extreme depth of field. We went out to London to get some sunset based shots but the travel to get into London took much longer than expected and it got darker much quicker so we had to improvise, and I had brought an LED light for backup, with multiple batteries for a longer charge. Many of the shots that were recorded came out much better than expected and had a heavy prominence in the final cut. The shots flowed well with the theme that we wanted to portray and this became very useful for our music video as we wanted to project our artists goals and backgrounds. During this day out we recorded lots of footage to have more than we needed. We got many landscape shots but we decided to not have many of them in the music video.
What key concepts have you been focusing on?
This week the main key concept was mise-en-scene as we needed more diversity and more pleasing shots for our music, so having the lots of graffiti on the walls and getting some other various based shots for the music video. While we was out there we got lots of different vibes beacuase of london being centred around many different ethnic cultures and this is shown through the use of art and graffiti in the walls are the filming location.
What were the main decisions and revisions you have made?
Filming in London was a huge benefit for our music video and brought with it many advancements with our product as the locations and visuals make the music video much more appealing and this was chosen by us to go this location. Another huge benefit was that the noise in the shots were kept to a minimum and had no huge direct affect on the final product making the footage much better than expected.
